We Stood Too Near

We Stood Too Near

There was a time we stood too near.
Just how it happened is not so clear.
The strange result was genetic transformation;
A chromosomal change defying explanation.

Whether induced by pathogen, perhaps bacterial,
Or maybe it was caused by something viral.
Evidence suggests it was definitely cellular,
But was its origin simply molecular?

The nuclear theory adds to the confusion;
Especially when asked if fission or fusion.
The mutation may be measured anatomically.
But was it completed instantly, atomically?

What might be described as magnetic,
The initiation could have been telepathic;
Might be merely extra sensory perception
Our brain waves conducive to communication.

At one time it seemed so improbable
That the two of us would be inseparable.
Now we are one. We are no longer two.
We don’t know how but we know it’s true.

Perhaps it is just a part of nature
That two become one by genetic mixture.
There was a time we stood too near,
Now bound by love is all that’s clear.
