Second Best

I've been east
And I've been west.
There's nothing worse
Than second best.

Better than most,
I should be happy.
So why in the world
Do I feel so crappy?

Now is the start
Of a new beginning.
Next time for sure,
I plan on winning.

I’m happy – but I’m not happy. For a lot of athletes, even if they win, they know they could have done better. That competitive drive is a motivating force.

Perhaps we should examine how we win and how we lose. We could have the attitude of “Show me a good loser and I will show you a loser.” Or is it better to be a gracious loser when you do not win? I think maybe the word would be “Sportsmanship.”

Do we sometimes place too much importance on winning? Is it more important to be in the game? Someone I know once said during competition, “I am just out here to make everyone else look fast.” The truth is that if you are in the game, you are a winner.
